Staked bench
All surfaces are hand planed creating a satisfying tactile finish. The top is textured using a shop modified scrub plane, a tool traditionally used on the bottom and backs of furniture, leveling the surface but not bringing it to a flat finish. By reversing this and showcasing the textured surface we are celebrating the craft and uniqueness of a handmade piece.
Using traditional joinery the bench is made with tapered, wedged mortice and tenons, also called staked joinery. Due to the taper, the joints can only get tighter with time. Examples of this joinery have been found dating back to ancient Egyptian furniture.
Made from solid quarter sawn UK Oak then oxidized using iron acetate, which reacts to the natural tannins in the Oak. Changing the colour of the wood to a deep, nearly black colour. Finished with OSMO oil/wax.
Also available in natural Oak.
Dimensions shown - 1220mm x 240mm x 450mm
